H.M. Government of Gibraltar is committed to producing energy in an environmentally sound and sustainable manner by investing in renewable energy technologies suitable for our situation and climate. It is important that Gibraltar looks to secure a diverse low carbon energy mix as well as promote energy efficiency and demand reduction.
Studies suggest that there are 4 viable options for Gibraltar in terms of renewable energy: offshore wind, energy from waste, solar and tidal energy.
Although the latter is still very much in a development stage, Government remains open to the possibility of exploring new technologies and is committed to producing at least 15% of its energy from renewable sources by 2020, as required under the Directive on Promotion of the Use of Energy from Renewable Sources (2009/28/EC), with a view to increasing this in the long term.
